Tunnel
The Westerschelde Tunnel is the longest traffic tunnel in the Netherlands.
- Length: 6.6 kilometres.
- Maximum speed: 100 km/h.
- Deepest point below the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP): 60 metres.
- The two tunnel tubes each have a diameter of 11 metres.
- Each tunnel tube accommodates two 3.5 metre lanes.
- Designed for cars, motorcycles and truck traffic.
- A vehicle’s height may not exceed 4 metres.
- The incline at both entrance and exit ramps is 4.5%.
- Time to reach the other side is five minutes.
- The tunnel is located below the Westerschelde between Borssele (Zuid-Beveland) and Terneuzen (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen).
- It provides an optimal connection between Zeeland, Flanders and West Brabant.
- To the north, the tunnel road connects to the A58 motorway and to the south to the N61.
- Agricultural traffic is permitted to use the tunnel under certain conditions.
- Monitored 24 hours per day by the tunnel’s operator.
- Two tubes with 26 communicating passages; one every 250 metres.
- An emergency station every 50 metres; 135 in total.
- 52 cameras, 40 fans, 135 emergency stop signs, 550 lighting points, 468 detection loops embedded in the asphalt and 185 loudspeakers for the public address system.
