Safety
All possible measures have been taken to make the Westerscheldetunnel safe. The tunnel is one of the safest in Europe. It consists of two seperate tubes, each with two driving lanes. Cross-connections every 250 metres provide safe exits. Every 50 metres there is an emergency station with a foam fire extinguisher, fire hose and inttercom for direct contect with the tunnel operator. The operator continuously monitors the tunnel using cameras, detection equipment and traffic signals.
